Caving Trip
December 3, 2011 - December 4, 2011

True Adventures is going caving!  We'll be crawling deep underground to explore Buckner's Cave in central Indiana.  No experience necessary.

Understand that this will definitely be an adventure. This is not a cave with electric lights and stairs.  There will be lots of cool stuff to see, but we will spend much of our time crawling on our bellies in some tight spaces and covered in mud.  It won't be easy, but it will be a great time!

We'll likely drive out early Saturday morning, explore the cave Saturday afternoon, stay in a budget hotel nearby, and return to Chicago on Sunday afternoon.

$50 covers hotel, caving, and snacks.

Movie Night
November 7, 2011

Join True Adventures for a free screening of the movie 180 Degrees South!   Everyone is welcome to join us to meet other adventure lovers and catch up with friends from past trips.  The movie tells the story of a surfing, sailing and climbing trip in South America.   We'll also be talking about our upcoming trips and enjoying some outdoor-themed snacks.

Location: Park Community Church, 1001 N Crosby, Room 203

Time: 6:45pm

Checkout the movie trailer here.

 Scheduled is as follows:

7:00 - Food and reuniting with True friends
7:30 - Movie 180 Degrees South

About the film (from Rotten Tomatoes): Inspired by Yvon Chouinard (founder of the Patagonia brand) and Doug Tompkins' (founder of the North Face brand) 1968 excursion into Patagonia, adventurer Jeff Johnson sets out to retrace the footsteps of his heroes' arduous trek as filmmaker Chris Malloy follows with camera in hand. But despite the thrill of surfing the biggest wave he's ever encountered, Johnson quickly discovers just how treacherous things can get when you decide to challenge Mother Nature's majesty; in addition to enduring some particularly rough waters just off the coast of Easter Island, he quickly discovers that conquering Cerro Corcovado is no simple task. Later, during a face-to-face meeting with Chouinard and Tompkins, Johnson learns how their lifelong quest to explore everything that nature has to offer eventually lead them on a drive to ensure that the places they visited over the years will be preserved for future generations of explorers to discover.

Orienteering
November 6, 2011

We'll carpool to the suburbs around 9am Sunday morning.  A beginners clinic will provide the basics of map and compass usage and the best strategies for staying on course.

Race times are staggered a few minutes apart starting around 10am. We'll divide up into teams of about two people and each team can do the course that best matches their skill level (usually 5 different courses of varying difficulty are available). Wilderness Survival School
May 8, 2011 - May 14, 2011

We're taking the "Standard Course" in New Jersey at the venerable Tom Brown Tracker School, a world renowned school teaching wilderness survival skills including tracking, survival, shelter, water, wild vegetables, trapping, and tool making.  They claim at the end you will be able to walk into a forest and live very well without aid.  Contact Tom Trimmer for more information or hit the contact us page.  Or even better, click here: http://www.trackerschool.com/course_template_new.asp?tid=6

Here's what will be covered over the six days during which you will live in a tent:

Nature Observation: Participants will be shown how to observe nature more deeply, and learn the basic philosophy that Tom considers the most important part of the school and the basis for all of his beliefs. Through skills including stalking (the ability to move silently and unseen through the forest) and camouflage (the means of concealment that allows one to become part of one's surroundings), students will learn how to immerse themselves in the natural world.

  • Tracking: Participants will learn the basics of tracking, including track identification and analysis, pressure releases, sign tracking, scat identification, and how to follow a trail.
  • Survival: The following survival skills will be covered:
  • Shelter: techniques for constructing the debris hut, wicki-up, mud hut, cave dwelling, thatched shelter, and pit dwelling.
  • Water: collecting water using a solar still, sink hole, plants, and other methods; purifying, transporting and storing water.
  • Fire: making fire from friction using primitive methods, including the bow drill and hand drill, as well as how to build a proper fire.
  • Food: finding food from plants and animals found in North America, ranging from desert to mountain terrain. Harvesting, preparation, and cooking of food will be covered, though in the interest of conservation only a sampling of such food will be prepared.
  • Trapping: trapping animals using primitive snares and deadfalls. No animals will be trapped during the course, but participants will understand how to do this, if necessary.
  • Tools: making stone tools, cordage and bow drills, as well as techniques for creating digging sticks, cooking utensils and bowls from a variety of natural materials.
  • Tanning: primitive methods of brain tanning and making rawhide, as well as many useful items that can be made with the hide.
  • Native American Lifestyle and Philosophy: the oneness with nature that is the underlying philosophy behind the skills learned, and how it is essential to survival.

Whitewater Rafting
April 29, 2011 - May 1, 2011

We are heading up to the Peshtigo River in Northern Wisconsin for some Whitewater Rafting with the Wildman Ranch Company.

April and May run-off of snow and deep frost results in periods of unusually high and exciting whitewater. These challenging conditions reach a level of CLASS IV!  Spring trips are usually run in larger six to eight man rafts with an experienced guide steering our boat. Deep holes, reversals and standing waves are common for these 5 miles of non-stop action. The water is swift so the miles go by fast.  We will attempt to run the river at least twice on Saturday. Wetsuits will be needed and included.

Optional high ropes course is on the docket for Sunday.

Details

Leaving: 5:00pm Friday, April 29th
Return: 9:00pm Sunday, May 1st
Cost: $145

March 28, 2009 - March 29, 2009

Park Adventures is going backpacking this March. We're heading up to Wisconsin's Kettle Moraine State Park (Northern Unit) for a section of the Ice Age Trail. We'll be hiking some of the roughest, most technical terrain in all of Wisconsin in whatever weather we encounter. It's an adventure of survival, team work, and endurance. Snowshoes optional. Mental tenacity required. Our crew will all meet at the Park Crosby campus. We will be driving about 3 hours north of Chicago, parking a car at the end of the trail, then continuing to our trail head. The trail will lead us among signs of the ice age and stop at a remote backcountry shelter where we will rest our weary souls and enjoy excellent camp food prepared by our own hands. The second day will bring light to our experience with the rising sun which will power us through the last few miles and land us near a lake and our shuttle home.
