Our True Adventures team leads small groups of people on challenging outdoor adventures to help grow and strengthen ourselves and our community. We believe that God’s presence is felt more vividly and fully in the wilderness, and so we embark there into the unknown to spend time with each other and with Him. During or after the trip, you will ideally feel an incredible sense of exhilaration, pride and personal growth. We intend for you to be pushed to and beyond your perceived limits, stretching and growing in ways you never thought possible. We want you to return to the city stretched and grown, never to be the same again, with many new relationships formed and existing ones strengthened through mutual experience.
We are a diverse, spiritual community that actively challenges our own personal barriers – physically, mentally, socially and spiritually – through challenging outdoor adventures throughout the Midwest, the United States and around the world. Through these experiences, we build new and powerful relationships to grow and strengthen our Christian community and impact the world around us. Non-Christians and Christians are welcomed – any and all. We were originally founded as an outreach ministry so come one, come all!
We will use our unique and intense adventures to deepen and strengthen our relationships with God, with ourselves, and with each other. We will build a self-perpetuating and sustainable ministry focused on bringing people to know Christ through our adventures and personal relationships.
Our formula for connecting people is to have some sort of challenging, scary, uncomfortable, exciting, outdoors adventure followed by a shared meal together afterwards. We feel this is a great way to build new relationships and deepen old ones.
Let’s be clear. This isn’t a members-only club for Christians to sit around a campfire singing Kumbaya. There will never be a moment like this during any of our trips. Guaranteed. This is also not a new-age “spiritual” group trying to “commune with mother earth”. This is an open, inclusive, honest, group with no hidden agendas. Our leaders are normal, down-to-earth people, just like you. Our mission is to create intense experiences to build community in Chicago, promote an open dialogue across religions, and add some excitement to people’s lives.
Our commitment is to make sure you never feel uncomfortable about the religious stuff. As for the adventure, we are committed to taking you outside your comfort zone as much as we can! Usually about 20% of the people on our trips are non-Christian so you will not be alone. The most “churchy” our trips get is a short prayer before the trip and occasionally before a meal. You can participate in as much or as little as you feel comfortable. The point is to make you feel comfortable around Christians with the thought that you might build some friendships with like-minded adventurers and perhaps choose to learn more about Christianity at your own pace after the trip, or not.
True Adventures is organized by Park Community Church whose mission is: “To be a biblical community where the Gospel of Jesus Christ transforms lives, renews the city, and impacts the world.” True Adventures was established to transform lives, renew the city, and impact the world by providing outdoor adventures to both Christians and non-Christians. Ideally you’ll see examples of Christianity from our leaders and others on the trips. If you have any spiritual thoughts or questions you’re certainly welcome to bring them up – the environments we are in are usually quite conducive to religious discussions.
Organizational Structure and Funding
True Adventures operates as a not-for-profit group within Park Community Church, a registered 501(c) non-profit organization. We have a core group of about 6 non-paid trip leaders that meet about every two months to plan trips. The cost for the events typically just covers our expenses for that trip, gear purchases, a small “buffer” for future trip deposits, and basic administrative expenses (like this website).
