National Geographic Live: The Lens of Adventure
December 9, 2013

Have you ever watched a National Geographic film about some incredibly remote, dangerous place—and then wondered what the people behind the cameras experienced to capture the action?

Join Bryan Smith, an award-winning filmmaker for the National Geographic Channel, as he shares gripping moments from his assignments to document extreme feats and high adventure in the world’s most challenging environments.

An experienced kayaker who had paddled steep rivers in India, Peru, and Russia, Smith was inspired to take up video photography while protesting a hydroelectric dam project that threatened British Columbian rivers. He quickly developed a knack for creating innovative technical solutions to capture dizzying images—inevitably putting himself and his team at risk to get the shot.

Currently, Smith is traveling the world in search of the world’s monster fish for the popular Nat Geo WILD series Hooked. He recently filmed and directed “The Man Who Can Fly”, a National Geographic special documenting experiments in human-powered flight. For Bryan Smith, extreme is “whatever is scary for you,” and he repeatedly tests the limits. Meet this dynamic filmmaker, adventurer, and conservationist, for amazing stories and intense footage shot in stunning locations.

“Winter-ish” Camping and Hiking

March 23, 2012 – March 25, 2012

We’re going to head to Governor Dodge State Park Friday March 23 to Sunday March 25th and it’s going to be AWESOME! I doubt we’ll see the 10 degree lows that we “enjoyed” last year, but the trip will be super legit anyways!

Plan will be to leave from Chicago Friday late afternoon, make the 3.5 hour drive while grabbing dinner in Madison, WI on the way, and then set up camp when we arrive.

Saturday we’ll hike all day. Looks to be no snow, so snowshoeing is out. Governor Dodge has some awesome sights, and unlike Illinois, is hilly!

Sunday we’ll spend some time in solitude in the morning before heading back to Chicago. Likely lunch in Madison.

You’ll want to have plenty of warm clothes, gloves, hats, and most importantly, VERY warm sleeping bag and pad. True Adventure has some to loan, and also has plenty of stoves, etc.

Price: $60 (includes campsites and food, does not include splitting gas/parking)

Backcountry Hut Ski trip in Colorado

March 16, 2012 – March 19, 2012

16 people in a backcountry hut (Fowler-Hilliard) up by Vail in Colorado. Do you telemark ski and have backcountry gear?  If not you can rent it.  Let Tom Trimmer know asap as the spots are going to be given away soon if we don’t take them.  You’ll be on a food team for two meals out of the two days and nights we’re in the hut.  Hut is a relative term as it sleeps sixteen and has beds and kitchen gear already in it for us.  It’s actually fairly nice.  I’m told it’s a ‘stout’ hike in of probably four miles or so.  You’ll also need a winter sleeping bag.  Plan for full ski days Saturday and Sunday, then out to the cars Monday.  Email Tom at trimmertom@yahoo.com for more details.  You should be an accompished skier to consider the trip.  Here’s one link to info on the hut: http://www.hutski.com/hut-routes/fowler-hilliard/fowler-hilliard-hut.html

Honduras Trip

March 2, 2012 – March 13, 2012

True Adventures is heading to Honduras this winter!

Honduras is the ideal adventure destination.  It’s is still a developing country, so costs are low, and it still provides an authentic travel experience.  The country offers tons of activities including some of the best diving in the carribean, kayaking, hiking in the jungles of the national parks, and exploring the ancient Mayan ruins of Copan are just a few options.

Duration: You are welcome to depart from Honduras earlier, or stay longer, but you will be responsible for arranging your own ground transportation.

Cost: Approx $1100-$1500 (including flights, accommodations, meals, etc) depending on the type of accommodations and activities selected.

Structure: Minimal. Like all of our trips, this isn’t a “guided” trip.  Everyone will be expected to play an active role in coordination, and we’ll keep things flexible so you can do what interests you.  Consider this more of a group of travel-, diving-, and adventure-lovers planning a trip to Honduras together.

Caving Trip

December 3, 2011 – December 4, 2011

True Adventures is going caving!  We’ll be crawling deep underground to explore Buckner’s Cave in central Indiana.  No experience necessary.

Understand that this will definitely be an adventure. This is not a cave with electric lights and stairs.  There will be lots of cool stuff to see, but we will spend much of our time crawling on our bellies in some tight spaces and covered in mud.  It won’t be easy, but it will be a great time!

We’ll likely drive out early Saturday morning, explore the cave Saturday afternoon, stay in a budget hotel nearby, and return to Chicago on Sunday afternoon.

$50 covers hotel, caving, and snacks.

Time: 6:45pm

Checkout the movie trailer here.

Scheduled is as follows:

7:00 – Food and reuniting with True friends
7:30 – Movie 180 Degrees South

About the film (from Rotten Tomatoes): Inspired by Yvon Chouinard (founder of the Patagonia brand) and Doug Tompkins’ (founder of the North Face brand) 1968 excursion into Patagonia, adventurer Jeff Johnson sets out to retrace the footsteps of his heroes’ arduous trek as filmmaker Chris Malloy follows with camera in hand. But despite the thrill of surfing the biggest wave he’s ever encountered, Johnson quickly discovers just how treacherous things can get when you decide to challenge Mother Nature’s majesty; in addition to enduring some particularly rough waters just off the coast of Easter Island, he quickly discovers that conquering Cerro Corcovado is no simple task. Later, during a face-to-face meeting with Chouinard and Tompkins, Johnson learns how their lifelong quest to explore everything that nature has to offer eventually lead them on a drive to ensure that the places they visited over the years will be preserved for future generations of explorers to discover.

Deep holes, reversals and standing waves are common for these 5 miles of non-stop action. The water is swift so the miles go by fast.  We will attempt to run the river at least twice on Saturday. Wetsuits will be needed and included.

Optional high ropes course is on the docket for Sunday.

Join True Adventures for a scuba diving trip on Saturday June 5th.  We will be taking a charter out of Burnham Harbor in Chicago and will be completing two single tank dives.  The plan is to dive the “Straits of Mackinac” shipwreck.  This is a 200 foot steam powered passenger/car ferry resting at a depth of 73 feet.  Penetration is possible for experienced divers though there is still much to see at the shallower top deck level for less experienced divers.  The charter is limited to 12 people.

A minimum of Basic Open Water scuba certification is required and will be verified upon boarding the charter. Certification can be attained prior to the trip and referrals are available.  $105 covers your spot on the charter if you are bringing all of your own equipment. If you need to rent it then the total is $160. Those renting equipment will need to schedule a fitting at the harbor a few days prior to the trip.

We’ll be heading off on our first western trip this fall to Colorado to ascend three fourteen thousand foot mountains over a long weekend. Plan is to fly in Thursday night October 8th, drive to Leadville and stay in a cheap hotel, then Friday go to the trailhead, hike to basecamp three or so hours, drop our gear, and climb Mount Missouri, then back to basecamp. Saturday we’ll attempt to climb Mounts Oxford and Belford. Climbing is hiking with no rock climbing experience needed. Potentially some or a lot of snow as it is late season. Whatever flight you would like to book is fine arriving Thursday evening, Tom Trimmer is on Southwest flight 201 departing Chicago at 4:50pm on October 8th, returning Sunday October 11th on flight 3073 at 8pm. Cost of $110 covers rental car, hotel, and food. We have gear you can borrow for the trip if need be. If you don’t make it all the way up the mountains, hiking in the valley is still beautiful. Winter Camping and Backpacking

March 28, 2009 – March 29, 2009

Park Adventures is going backpacking this March. We’re heading up to Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine State Park (Northern Unit) for a section of the Ice Age Trail. We’ll be hiking some of the roughest, most technical terrain in all of Wisconsin in whatever weather we encounter. It’s an adventure of survival, team work, and endurance. Snowshoes optional. Mental tenacity required. Our crew will all meet at the Park Crosby campus. We will be driving about 3 hours north of Chicago, parking a car at the end of the trail, then continuing to our trail head. The trail will lead us among signs of the ice age and stop at a remote backcountry shelter where we will rest our weary souls and enjoy excellent camp food prepared by our own hands. The second day will bring light to our experience with the rising sun which will power us through the last few miles and land us near a lake and our shuttle home.
